Nellie White Gault
Nellie White Gault was the mom of Helen Arrington who was the mom of Tamara Hennis who is my mom.
Nellie's dad changed his last name and lied about his age so he could fight for the south in the Civil War - Peter (born Cow) White.
He had two wives, two families and neither knew of each other until after his death and the second one applied for military death benefits and was denied because the first wife, Nellie's mom Angelika Frederica Engle White, already got it. He was often gone for a year or two at a time (later learned it was likely because of his other family) and suffered deeply from his experiences in the War. Apparently he was quite hard to live with.
Peter often said his daughter, Nellie, was some orphan left on their doorstep because she was more red haired than the others (she was the youngest of five). She believed it for many years, but it wasn't true.
